Arbitration

ArbitrationConflict is an accepted, expected aspect of life in our modern society. Our day-to-day dealings with people will sometimes require a need to assert our position in resistance of others; that is conflict. In situations relating to business, family, consumer relations, landlord and tenant, as well as a myriad of other areas, when a conflict arises, the first I perceived option is to sue or litigate. While litigation may be appropriate and called for in some cases, more and more often agreements are drafted with the inclusion of an arbitration clause. This requires that parties have the matter decided by an independent third party arbitrator, who will listen to the positions of the parties and make a binding decision.

Arlene Blake of our office has acted as an Arbitrator for the Canadian Motor Vehicle Arbitration Plan since 1994. She participated in the Rural Umpire pilot project of the Government of Alberta. She sat as chair for the Student Union Review Board, University of Calgary. Apart from her law degree Arlene holds a certificate in conflict resolution from the Justice Institute of British Columbia, and is a member and trainer with the Alberta Arbitration and Mediation Society. Inquiries on available dates for arbitration or for more information may be directed to Arlene Blake at 403-233-4251.
